Conference Overview

Today's current monetization strategy for social networks is in dire straits. The concept of using the social media platform to generate eyeballs and advertising revenues is in need of a complete overhaul, especially during this global economic crisis. The days of "got an idea, go to an investor, burn some cash, go back for more cash, burn more cash, get plenty of eyeballs, and hope that, eventually, God knows over how much time, profit can be generated from advertising" may soon be gone for social network entrepreneurs - if not forever, at least in the foreseeable future.

NING has taken the first bold and dramatic step toward a new monetization strategy that has sent shock waves throughout the social media community and which has tremendous implications in terms of not only how private social network creators and group owners and their members will go forward but also how the entire social media ecosystem will respond or adjust to this move.

However, this is a discussion that goes way beyond NING.   It is about a constant and perennial problem that needed to be addressed a long long time ago:  How do social networks--including private social network creators, group owners, and all social network members--truly leverage the power of the social network to their individual or collective benefit?   The current social media monetization strategy status quo has been unsustainable for a very long time although it has been kept alive by fear and paralysis.  It is time for all of us to make a change because it is in our bests interests to do so.

In this session, we will look at today's state of the social media union and provide you, once and for all, with both the short- and long-term solutions you need to address this current and very vexing problem.

Issues We Will Address

  • Is it the Beginning of the End of FREE private social networks or is NING just an aberration?
  • Examples of highly successful social networks.  Which ones have failed and why?
  • How are social network members, including creators of private social networks and group owners, leveraging the powerful potential of social networks to their individual or collective benefit?
  • What does the future hold for today's social networks and which ones will become irrelevant?
  • What are the latest technologies that will impact today's social networks?
  • How will mobile social networking impact today's social networks?
  • Your own insights into how we can all proceed.
